Would you like to take a bike tour to discover the wonderful gems of the Sicilian Baroque era? Follow the itineraries that lead you from Marina di Modica to Ragusa. Alternatively, head north to Noto before reaching Syracuse.
The routes for mountain bikes, or racing bikes, in Sicily, take you on a journey through history. Visit enchanting cities, declared world heritage sites by the UNESCO.
The available itineraries vary in terms of points of interest, difficulty and type of bicycle.
Here are some of them:
The plateau of the Iblei Mountains, which stretches between the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse. The landscape is characterized by gentle hills and green valleys dotted with quarries. There are also barren and wild stretches with numerous dry stonewalls that still delimit the various properties.
Along the way, you will pass through the historical centres of cities such as Modica, Ragusa, Palazzolo Acreide. Three thousand years of history are stratified here; each of them left its charm intact.
Whereas, by following the coast, you can reach the Island of the Currents, a watershed between the Mediterranean and the Ionian Seas.
Then head towards the ancient fishing village of Marzamemi and continue to the splendid wildlife oasis of Vendicari. Along the way, the sea will catch your eye with its colours.
Finally, you can start from Marina di Modica to reach Noto, the epitome of Sicilian Baroque. From there, continue towards Syracuse.
Thus, in a few dozen kilometres, you will take an extraordinary journey through time: from the 17th century Baroque to the splendour of Magna Graecia.
A visit to the historic centre of Syracuse, the island of Ortigia, will be the best way to end your tour.
Please note that the garage of Modica Beach Resort, from March to May, turns into a workshop for bikers.
This period is perfect for cycling around the South of Sicily thanks to the good weather and temperatures that are still very pleasant.
