Modica Beach Resort - The Donnafugata Castle 2
The film set of the film Il Gattopardo

The Donnafugata Castle

Less than 35 km from Modica is the Castle of Donnafugata. During the 19th century the Castle became one of the most significant centres of social life in the area.

The name Donnafugata derives from the Arabic "Ain-jafat" and means "Source of Health". While the legend speaks of a woman who managed to escape from the castle where she was held prisoner by the perfidious Count Berardo Cabrera.

The building, consisting of 122 rooms, covers an area of approximately 2500 m².
The gothic style exteriors, merlons and galleries with pairs of columns adorned with capitals, intertwine with prestigious and refined interiors.

In the park of the castle there is the splendid "Pirdituri" that is to say, the stone labyrinth and the coffee house where the nobles held their refreshments.
The castle was also the film set for Luchino Visconti's film, The Leopard.
